Community Autism Resources has been providing assistive technology support to the community since 2015. Our Assistive Technology Hub supports communication, autonomy, and social connection. What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology ("AT") is any item, piece of equipment, or program that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual. AT can be both low-tech, such as a visual schedule or communication board, or high-tech such as a dynamic speech generating device.
Where can I use Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology can be used across all environments - whether at home, school, work, program, or out in the community. AT is highly customized to individual needs.
Do I need to be "tech-savvy" to use AT?
Absolutely not! We are here to help you learn every step of the way.
What does the AT program involve?
Individuals will first be evaluated by Shannon Sousa, M.S., CCC-SLP, AT. During the evaluation, skills and needs will be explored. We will discuss potential fits for AT. We might participate in device trials or take some materials home to use.
Where do we meet?
The individual can choose the most comfortable location to meet. Ideally, we will meet at a location in which the individual needs to access AT. Meetings can be held virtually, in person at the CAR office, or in person at a designated meeting location.
What is the cost of the program?
The program is a service through DDS which means that there will be no out of pocket evaluation expenses for those individuals that are found eligible through DDS. Certain materials or devices might be recommended for purchase. We will work with you to figure out the best funding options>

If you are receiving this service through DDS, we are contractually obligated to provide service information to the DDS Service Coordinator assigned to the student. We will, whenever possible, include the student in all communication.
AT Courses
iPad Basics - 2 hour course
Introduction to using the iPad with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. This training includes basic use of the iPad from turning it on and off to specific accessibility settings that will allow a person with ASD to use the iPad to the best of their ability. This training concludes with a demonstration of apps that are useful for students and adults with all levels of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Introduction to Assistive Technology - 2 hour course
This is an introductory course which outlines the types of Assistive Technology (AT) that can be helpful for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Technology is available in both low-tech and high-tech forms and can support individuals in many areas including communication, organization, independence, and socialization. This training will highlight the components of AT as well as showcase a variety of AT systems that have been successful supports for individuals with ASD.

Technology Forward Initiative
Through the Technology Forward Initiative, the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) will promote and develop the use of Supportive Technology as an opportunity for more inclusive and independent lives for people with disabilities.
