Spring Gathering Grandparents Luncheon

April 22, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 1:15 pm

Grandparents will have the opportunity to connect with other grandparents and to hear our speaker for the morning Shannon Souza CCC-SLP. The topic: What is Executive Function and Why is it so Important in Understanding Autism.
After the presentation we will have a delicious buffet luncheon, with time to meet and chat with our speaker. This event is FREE to grandparents who live in our service region OR whose grandchild lives in our service region. For those outside our service region the cost is $28 PP.
Topic description: Executive function skills are an integral part of everyday life.  Whether task initiation, organization, working memory, or flexible thinking, these skills help to guide our actions.  Developing these skills takes practice and patience.  Executive function skills are often challenging for neurodiverse individuals.  Having a stronger understanding of what these skills are and how they impact behavior will help us to better support the neurodiverse individuals whom we love.
Topics covered include: 
  • What is executive function?
  • Which skills fall under the umbrella of executive function?
  • How does executive function impact behavior?
  • How can I support someone developing and improving their executive function skills?

Speaker Bio: Shannon Sousa, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP is a speech-language pathologist and assistive technology professional.  She is the Director of Assistive Technology at Community Autism Resources and teaches life skills through the Gottschall Access Program.  Shannon received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wheaton College, Master of Science in Speech Language-Pathology from the University of Rhode Island, and Certification in Assistive Technology from the University of New Hampshire.
Shannon enjoys helping individuals of all ages learn new skills and explore assistive technology supports.  She aims to find creative ways to motivate individuals by incorporating interests into sessions.  In her free time, she enjoys listening to musicals, crafting, and playing with her dog, Ripley.
