Description of the talk:
During this presentation, we will discuss diagnostic approaches to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), differences in presentation between boys and girls and why girls with ASD are often misdiagnosed. You will be provided a brief overview of co-occurring psychiatric disorders that are seen more often in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and how this impacts their relationships with others, their care and their treatment. Some of the co-occurring diagnosis we will talk about include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Mood Disorders, Gender Identity Disorder, Psychosis, Emotional Dysregulation and Substance Use Disorders.
We will also discuss types of treatment, including educational and social emotional supports, behavioral supports, familial education and support and medication management.
Most importantly, we will talk about how you can best assist those you care for who have ASD. By taking time to step back and observe, ask questions, take notes, and share the information you’ve gathered with those who work with and care for the individual, you can become an effective advocate for them.
