DESCRIPTION:For over 25 years this special event has offered grandparents the opportunity to chat and share with others who understand the unique joys and challenges of having an Autistic grandchild. It’s also an opportunity to hear speaker(s) with expertise in Autism discuss a particular topic. \nOur Topic for the morning\, by popular demand\, \nAutism in the Pre-teen/Teen Years!! \n Even if your grandchild is still young\, they do grow up so fast! \nThis is something you won’t want to miss! \n With our speakers: Mary Fox\, Co-Executive Director of CAR and \nSarah Walkden\, Program Coordinator for the CAR GAP program. \n Adolescence brings many changes\, and grandparents often play an important role in supporting autistic youth during this stage of development. Our speakers will explore key topics including puberty\, evolving social relationships\, and emotional regulation. DESCRIPTION:Held each spring and fall\, Community Autism Resources’ Grandparents’ Lunch offers grandparents the opportunity to hear professionals in the autism field share information on important topics. More importantly it offers them the chance to meet and chat with others who understand the unique joys and challenges that they as grandparents share. \nJoin us for a Special Presentation on ASD\, Wandering & Safety presented by Jan Randall of Community Autism Resources. \nWe hope grandparents will join us for this important and timely workshop. \nStatistics show that 49% of autistic individuals have wandered or bolted from a safe location (home\, school\, family members home) From June 1 – August 27th 2024 wandering resulted in the drowning deaths of 27 children and 2 adults across the US with 2 of those deaths occurring in MA. During that same time there were 12 close calls with individuals being rescued from the water. \nThis workshop will cover: Why do children/adults wander/bolt\, when & why it happens\, home and personal safety items\, as well as tools and skills that can reduce the risk of wandering. We’ll also discuss how to be prepared if a wandering emergency occurs! \nEVERY Grandparent will receive a copy of our new Wandering Prevention Packet! \nThis is also your chance to say goodbye to Jan as this will be the final Grandparent’s Lunch that she will be hosting! \nFor Lunch \nThis will be a plated meal not a buffet. Lancellotta\, OTA and Kimberly Mulcahy MS\, CCC-SLP \nTalk Description: Nutrition is a necessity for a child’s growth and wellbeing. For children on the Autism spectrum eating can be especially challenging\, causing frustration and concern for many families and caregivers. There are several factors that can cause these difficulties such as poor motor control\, muscle tone\, sensory challenges\, rigidity or behavioral issues\, food allergies and even communication. \nTracy and Kimberly will share basic knowledge of what these challenges look like and how to best support your grandchildren with ASD during mealtimes. This will be a fun and engaging conversation with real life examples. Lancellotta\, OTA: I am a certified Occupational therapist assistant licensed in both Ma and RI specializing in pediatrics. I have been working for South Coast Educational Collaborative for over 24 years.  My students range in age from 3-22 with the majority of them ages 3-12. I have many students with varying feeding needs which range from sensory disorders to poor oral motor planning. I help assess each student for safety and equipment needs as well as any sensory complications that may make mealtimes a struggle. \nKimberly Mulcahy MS\, CCC-SLP: I am a Speech and Language Pathologist who has been working with South Coast Educational Collaborative for over 14 years. My specialty is in pediatrics\, and I work with students with varying ranges of abilities\, the majority of them between the ages of 3-18.  Feeding is one of my areas of specialty. I service many students with varying feeding needs which range from sensory disorders to proper motor planning. We offer a number of accommodations and supports during mealtimes to ensure they are safe and enjoyable.

You will be provided a brief overview of co-occurring psychiatric disorders that are seen more often in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders and how this impacts their relationships with others\, their care and their treatment.
