DESCRIPTION:Held each spring and fall\, Community Autism Resources’ Grandparents’ Lunch offers grandparents the opportunity to hear professionals in the autism field share information on important topics. More importantly it offers them the chance to meet and chat with others who understand the unique joys and challenges that they as grandparents share. \nJoin us for a Special Presentation on ASD\, Wandering & Safety presented by Jan Randall of Community Autism Resources. \nWe hope grandparents will join us for this important and timely workshop. \nStatistics show that 49% of autistic individuals have wandered or bolted from a safe location (home\, school\, family members home) From June 1 – August 27th 2024 wandering resulted in the drowning deaths of 27 children and 2 adults across the US with 2 of those deaths occurring in MA. During that same time there were 12 close calls with individuals being rescued from the water. \nThis workshop will cover: Why do children/adults wander/bolt\, when & why it happens\, home and personal safety items\, as well as tools and skills that can reduce the risk of wandering. We’ll also discuss how to be prepared if a wandering emergency occurs! \nEVERY Grandparent will receive a copy of our new Wandering Prevention Packet! \nThis is also your chance to say goodbye to Jan as this will be the final Grandparent’s Lunch that she will be hosting! \nFor Lunch \nThis will be a plated meal not a buffet. DESCRIPTION:PEERS® 8 week session at Community Autism Resources (40 Dean St. Taunton\, MA) \nStarting Tuesday March 4th through Tuesday April 22nd \n40 Dean St. Unit A Taunton MA \n4:30-6 PM \nCost $200 \nIn our PEERS® Sessions\, our highly skilled staff team will work with each group to focus on the strengths and uniqueness that everyone brings. We bring many years of experience working with autistic individuals navigating through the nuanced world of making and keeping friends. The curriculum we use to create our groups is from PEERS®\, which is an evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated individuals diagnosed with ASD who are interested in learning skills to make and keep friends and develop romantic relationships. This is an internationally acclaimed program that was originally developed at UCLA by PEERS® Clinic Founding Director\, Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson. \nDuring each group session\, the staff will do a role play where they make a common “social error”\, then we talk about how that could have gone better. Next everyone is given the opportunity to practice these skills in a judgement-free space with staff there to help prompt until confidence is built. \nTopics this group will cover: \n\nConversational Skills (starting\, maintaining and ending)\nStaying safe online\nHosting or attending get-togethers\nDating (flirting\, asking someone on a date\, going on dates\, etc)\nHandling Disagreements\nHandling Bullying (Indirect and Direct)\n\nThis is not your average “autism social skills” group. We truly play off of the strengths\, interests and goals of each individual that attends. We have fun with it because\, after all\, making friends should be fun! \nWe do ask that each person that attends brings a social coach with them. A social coach is any trusted adult that plays a role in the individual’s life. It could be a parent\, sibling\, relative\, friend\, job coach\, etc. The social coaches are not in the same room as the rest of the group. They go in a different room with another staff member and talk about the best ways they can support you in the community to reach your social goals (not the goals that anyone else has for you!) \nPlease reach out to Sarah Walkden with any questions or to register.
