She has 20 years of experience working with children and families in outpatient clinics\, private schools\, community mental health\, home-based treatment programs and residential facilities. Sara specializes in working with individuals facing anxiety and depression but also in children presenting with developmental issues.  Sara is often described as dedicated to her clients\, creative in her treatment approaches and sensitive to the unique needs of each family. \n ** From the Autism Research Institute: “Anxiety disorders are among the common comorbidities of autism spectrum disorder. The reason for this overlap is still under investigation. However\, several treatments for anxiety may deliver positive results for people with both anxiety and autism spectrum disorder.  \nAnxiety disorders are the most common mental disorder in the United States\, affecting about 18% of the general population. Research has shown that the incidence of anxiety in people with autism may be significantly higher than in the general population. One systematic review of the published research on anxiety and autism found that almost 40% of children with autism and 50% of adults with autism experience some sort of anxiety disorder (Van Steensel\, 2011). Adolescents and school-age children with autism have the highest prevalence of clinical (40%) and subclinical anxiety (26%) compared to other age groups with autism.” \n We are grateful to announce that this event is sponsored in part by: Norton Police Association\, and ABA Helps!

SUMMARY:A Conversation About… New ABA: Bringing Joy into Teaching and Supporting Clients/Children
DESCRIPTION:Via zoom so you can even watch if you are on vacation!\n\nDescription: In recent years the field has been moving towards a kinder approach that relies heavily on compassion and building a rapport\, but so many inside and outside of the practice are not aware of this. Why is that?  It is everyone’s job to know what is considered ethical and unethical when it comes to ABA treatment. Let’s have an open discussion together about client/child rights\, what is considered unethical\, and how to bring complaints to light if you think something is wrong. Together we can continue this shift towards a more compassionate field of ABA. SUMMARY:A Conversation About.....Rethinking Traditional Functional Behavior Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom with our special guest speaker : Connie Persike\, M.S.\, CCC/SLP \nMany experts are working tirelessly to shift the behavioral paradigm away from the traditional behavioral approach and towards what current relational and neuroscience research has taught us. When we know better\, we do better! \nLet’s take that information and use it to redesign tools we use frequently in schools today – functional behavioral assessments and positive behavioral intervention plans. If you are struggling with these processes\, if they don’t align with your current philosophy and belief system then this workshop is for you! \nREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED \nYou will receive an email with the link a few days prior to the talk. \nAbout the Speaker: Connie Persike\, M.S.\, CCC/SLP\, is a highly experienced Speech Language Pathologist and Educational Consultant. She has 20+ years of experience in educational settings and holds a certificate in instructional coaching\, positive education\, and applied educational neuroscience. She served as a member of the multi-state work group to help develop the Common Core Essential Elements for English Language Arts. Connie is a published writer for Autism Parenting Magazine\, writes for Exceptional Needs Today\, and is a guest blogger for The Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint. She created an innovative process to assess student behavior\, which deviates from the traditional behaviorism approach and aligns with current relational and neuroscience while maintaining a trauma-sensitive and neurodiversity approach. Connie works from the guiding mission that Connection + Collaboration = Endless Possibilities \n

SUMMARY:A Conversation About.......Fitness for Individuals with ASD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for A Conversation About… Fitness for Individuals with ASD with our Speaker Ryan Feeney\, Owner of ASD Fit Boston \nRyan will be talking about: \n\nWhat does “fitness” really mean?\nThe importance of “proactive” healthcare and the independence that is associated with higher levels of fitness\nThe common physical issues seen in adaptive and neurodiverse populations\nThe role fitness plays in social skills\, confidence\, and inclusion\nRyan will also be discussing the importance of having the movement skills to create experiences\, and to live a full life!\n\nPlease join us and bring your questions!  This event is free and is open to individuals with ASD & their families who live within our service region. \nSpace is limited. Register here.\nQuestions please contact JanRandall@community-autism-resources.com \nAbout the Speaker: Ryan Feeney has a BS Exercise Science Bridgewater State University\, and certification in Autism Fitness from the Adaptive Training Academy.\nGrowing up an athlete I developed a passion for physical movement and exercise. Seeing a direct correlation between strength and conditioning and my success on various sports fields the natural progression began of me training athletes. While working as a college baseball coach I took a job working in Special Education in the local school system. Seeing the lack of physical outlets for these individuals I knew I could make an immediate difference. \nAbout ASD Fit: ASD Fit Boston was developed to bring exercise to neuro-diverse individuals in a positive way. We use strength and conditioning concepts to give clients to tools to be more independent. Meeting athletes at their level allows us to be inclusive no matter the background of the individual. We consider athletes anyone who moves. From clients with TBI\, Down Syndrome\, Autism\, Connective Tissue Disorder\, Anxiety\, Processing Delays\, and any other situations that typically make exercise difficult ASD Fit Boston makes healthy living possible for everyone.\nA proactive approach to healthcare creates habits and movement patterns that will continue to create possibilities throughout client’s lives. We hope to give everyone the skills to do everything from biking to skiing\, from road races to hiking\, and to most importantly never feel left out of activities being done by family and friends.

SUMMARY:PEERS® Program for Adolescents - Ages 13-17
DESCRIPTION:A Social Skills Group for Teens (Ages 13-17) with ASD \nDuring the pandemic Mary Fox and Shannon Sousa became certified in PEERS® for Adolescents.   Part of this training was to supply them with the tools to successfully host this virtually.  So\, with much excitement\, we are offering our first PEERS® for Adolescents program. \nThere is a “social coach” aspect that is mandatory and simply means that a parent or guardian need to be present for each of our meetings.  Two devices will be needed (one for the teen and one for the social coach) as we will be breaking into different groups.  If you are interested in signing up click the link below to fill out a registration form.  Once that form is filled out\, you will be contacted by Mary or Shannon to complete the intake process.  You are not officially registered until you are confirmed by one of them. \nPEERS® for Young Adults is an evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated teenagers between 13-17 years of age who are interested in learning skills to make and keep friends.  This internationally acclaimed program was originally developed at UCLA by PEERS® Clinic Founding Director\, Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson. During each group session\, teens are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills. A large part of the success of this program is the motivation and participation of both the teen and a parent/guardian as their “social coach” \nTeens will learn about: \n\nConversational skills\nAppropriate use of humor\nElectronic Communication\nHandling Direct and Indirect Bullying\nHandling Arguments and Disagreements\nOrganizing Get-Togethers with Friends\n\n**Due to Covid-19 we have added more material about online/internet safety** \nThis course will be offered online over Zoom free of charge to teens diagnosed w/ASD  living within our service region.  To ensure everyone has a valuable experience\, we are keeping the groups to a 10 person maximum. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact\, Mary Fox\, Certified PEERS® Provider\, at (508) 807-4930.  Please note that email is the best mode of communication maryfox@community-autism-resources.com \nTo Register\, Click HERE!
